CINECONCERT – CHRISTINE OTT: TABU

Sunday 25 February 2024 2024

Christine Ott herself is a French composer and pianist. She is best known for her collaborations with Yann Tiersen, Radiohead and Tindersticks. Christine Ott specializes in the ‘Ondes Martenot’, a special instrument designed by Maurice Martenot in 1918. Ott’s music is therefore just as wonderful as the instrument with which it is made. It’s part Satie, but the ominous electronic sounds make it feel just as good as an ominous soundtrack.

Movie: Tabu [F.W. Murnau & Robert Flaherty 1931)
In his latest film, FW Murnau presents the story of two young lovers on the idyllic island of Bora Bora in the South Pacific. Their lives are shattered when the ancient warrior declares the girl the chosen maid and no man is forbidden to even look at her. Refusing to accept a life apart, they flee to another island, one that is decadent and westernized. The boy works as a pearl diver, but does not fully understand the concept of money and soon finds himself in debt. When the ancient warrior tracks them down, they again intend to run away, but in a desperate attempt to pay off his debts, the boy dives for pearls in shark-infested waters. The boy is successful, but fate seems determined to keep the two lovers apart.
